The Challenge
Menstruation is still considered a taboo in rural India. Mothers are reluctant to talk about it, while fathers choose to ignore its existence. Due to this stigma, lack of education, awareness and resources more than 77% of menstruating girls and women in India use an old cloth, newspapers, dried leaves and husk sand during their periods. This is not only unhygienic but can be dangerous to their overall health. During their period days, they are prohibited from participating in day-to-day activities, even entering the kitchen, and are forbidden from performing any rituals. This natural, healthy biological process has been stigmatised and shamed.
